Join us as we work to create a thriving ecosystem that delivers accessible, high-quality, and sustainable healthcare for all.

We are looking for Manager, Project Design Management to join our Project Management Office team within our Cloud Infrastructure Engineering division. The PMO provides project management to the internal initiatives as well as external customer facing projects. The projects and programs we support range in size, complexity and duration as well as cross over multiple teams. But enough about us; let’s talk about you.

You are a project or program manager with a passion for spreadsheets and meeting minutes. Following lessons learned, managing risks and documenting solutions appeal to you. You love working in a large environment so you can solve challenges that become more complex with scale. What’s most important to you is learning new things- and you’re seeking the best environment to enable that growth for yourself.

The Team: We are a bunch of project managers who are passionate about organization, process improvement, creating templates and driving consistency across the organization. We use an agile-based framework to execute our work, ensuring we are always focused on the most important and impactful needs of the business. We support systems in both the private and public cloud and make data-driven decisions based on which one best suits the needs of the business. We are relentless in our mission to manage multiple projects and programs with a standardized reporting mechanism to ensure that our customers have a positive and consistent experience with us for every project.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage a portfolio of high-profile programs focused on a particular product line.
  • Manage tradeoffs across the portfolio to ensure business objectives are met and internal obstacles are removed.
  • Coordinate with TPMs and other stakeholders across products to address and identify cross product dependencies.
  • Develop effective relationships across the Product Development function.
  • Take ownership of the overall program planning process, program schedule, and initiate process improvements when identified.
  • Serve as an Agile evangelist to the teams.
  • Influence program performance through exercising sound technical judgement, challenging proposals, and building consensus.
  • Be a driving force for progress and achievement of program goals by aligning Product Development teams and processes, ferreting out roadblocks and dependencies, and doing what it takes to unblock the team.
  • Encourage knowledge-sharing across functional groups.
  • Establish success metrics for program team and Technical Program-wide KPIs.

Education & Experience Required:

  • 3+ years of technical program management experience.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience required; advanced degree welcome
  • Agile experience is required; AgilePM certification preferred
  • Proven success managing successful, complex, business critical programs.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills: internally, client-facing, and with Senior Leadership stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated past experience in defining and measuring team success via data-driven metrics & reporting.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Ability to assume sole and independent responsibility for a wide array of projects with increasing amounts of scope and/or visibility.
  • Excellent communicator, a consummate team player, highly adaptive, and have a strong sense of personal integrity.
  • Comfort wielding influence instead of authority.
  • Ability/desire to own & lead dynamic, important work – with flexibility and willingness to get into the weeds and do whatever it takes to reach goals.
  • Analytical, but also empirical, and deeply dedicated to continuous improvement.
  • Has an eye for detail and ability to read between the lines, while equally comfortable assessing the strategic big picture.
  • Superior presentation and meeting management skills; with ability to drive toward consensus with command, credibility, and poise.

About athenahealth

Here’s our vision: To create a thriving ecosystem that delivers accessible, high-quality, and sustainable healthcare for all.

What’s unique about our locations?
From an historic, 19th century arsenal to a converted, landmark power plant, all of athenahealth’s offices were carefully chosen to represent our innovative spirit and promote the most positive and productive work environment for our teams. Our 10 offices across the United States and India — plus numerous remote employees — all work to modernize the healthcare experience, together.

Our company culture might be our best feature.
We don't take ourselves too seriously. But our work? That’s another story. athenahealth develops and implements products and services that support US healthcare: It’s our chance to create healthier futures for ourselves, for our family and friends, for everyone.

Our vibrant and talented employees — or athenistas, as we call ourselves — spark the innovation and passion needed to accomplish our goal. We continue to expand our workforce with amazing people who bring diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives at every level, and foster an environment where every athenista feels comfortable bringing their best selves to work.

Our size makes a difference, too: We are small enough that your individual contributions will stand out — but large enough to grow your career with our resources and established business stability.

Giving back is integral to our culture. Our athenaGives platform strives to support food security, expand access to high-quality healthcare for all, and support STEM education to develop providers and technologists who will provide access to high-quality healthcare for all in the future. As part of the evolution of athenahealth’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, we’ve selected nonprofit partners that align with our purpose and let us foster long-term partnerships for charitable giving, employee volunteerism, insight sharing, collaboration, and cross-team engagement.

What can we do for you?
Along with health and financial benefits, athenistas enjoy perks specific to each location, including commuter support, employee assistance programs, tuition assistance, employee resource groups, and collaborative workspaces — some offices even welcome dogs.

In addition to our traditional benefits and perks, we sponsor events throughout the year, including book clubs, external speakers, and hackathons. And we provide athenistas with a company culture based on learning, the support of an engaged team, and an inclusive environment where all employees are valued.

We also encourage a better work-life balance for athenistas with our flexibility. While we know in-office collaboration is critical to our vision, we recognize that not all work needs to be done within an office environment, full-time. With consistent communication and digital collaboration tools, athenahealth enables employees to find a balance that feels fulfilling and productive for each individual situation.
