Role Overview

CarGurus’ Engineering Platform team is hiring a Principal Cloud Architect to craft highly-scalable, flexible, and resilient AWS cloud and platform architectures that address our long term business goals.

The Engineering Platform team plays a key role at CarGurus allowing us to operate at scale by improving developer productivity, building customer trust and satisfaction in platform services, and providing a reliable, performant, cost optimized, and secure platform. We are constantly modernizing our technology platform and are looking for someone who is experienced in architecting our next generation platforms built on top of the AWS cloud while ensuring they provide a great developer experience. They will be reporting to the Vice President of Platform Engineering and working closely with their engineering peers.

What you’ll do:

  • Lead the architectural design and strategy to achieve scalable, reliable, and secure AWS cloud services and platform components
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define and prioritize platform requirements, ensuring alignment with business goals and customer needs.
  • Drive the adoption of best practices for cloud-native development, continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD), and infrastructure as code (IaC).
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to the engineering team, mentoring junior engineers, conducting code reviews, and promoting a culture of engineering excellence.
  • Drive platform innovation and modernization initiatives, evaluating emerging technologies and industry trends to enhance developer productivity, improve operational efficiency, and optimize costs.
  • Lead efforts to optimize platform performance, scalability, and cost efficiency, leveraging cloud-native services and infrastructure.
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders to provide updates on platform initiatives, solicit feedback, and address concerns or issues.

Who you are:

  • 10+ years of experience in software and systems architecture with at least 5 years experience in AWS architecture.
  • Comfortable operating in a wide array of software languages such as: Java, JavaScript, Golang, and Python.
  • Solid understanding of Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, Prometheus, and GitHub.
  • Experienced software engineer with a deep understanding of architecture, cloud computing, and platform engineering.
  • Proven track record of designing and implementing scalable, reliable, and secure infrastructure services and platform components.
  • Passionate about improving developer productivity and efficiency through the adoption of best practices, automation, and tooling.
  • Proactive and forward-thinking, constantly seeking out opportunities to innovate and drive the evolution of the platform.
  • Excellent communication skills and can effectively articulate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Committed to ensuring the reliability, security, and performance of production systems and services, and take pride in delivering value to customers through a robust and resilient platform.
