Job Overview
We are seeking a skilled Observability Engineer to join our Infrastructure and Systems Architecture (ISA) team. This role is crucial for enhancing the reliability, performance, and scalability of our systems through advanced observability practices. You will be instrumental in establishing a new observability practice within the ISA team, contributing to our strategic vision for robust and efficient systems management.
In this position, you will design, implement, and manage monitoring, logging, and tracing solutions that provide deep insights into the health and performance of our applications. This role offers the opportunity to work with cutting-edge technologies and collaborate with cross-functional teams globally.
What you will be doing
- Designing and implementing observability solutions, including metrics, logging, and tracing to meet business objectives.
- Using modern observability tools to monitor systems, ensuring high availability and performance.
- Collaborating closely with product owners, scrum masters, business analysts, and software developers to integrate observability into our system design and development lifecycle.
- Developing sustainable observability systems through automation and continuous improvement of existing practices.
- Participating in capacity planning and optimisation activities to support current and future infrastructure demands.
- Integrating observability tools with existing platforms using technologies such as OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, and Loki.
- Staying updated on industry trends and new technologies and contributing to proof-of-concept activities to optimize our observability strategy.
- Providing expert support and troubleshooting for observability tools and systems.
What skills and experience you need to have
- Proven experience with observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, and OpenTelemetry.
- Strong background in cloud platforms, particularly AWS, including services like CloudWatch, ECS, and Lambda.
- Proficiency in scripting (e.g., Bash, Python) and programming languages (e.g., Java, Go) for automation and tool integration.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform, and CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Jenkins, AWS CodePipeline).
- Solid understanding of containerisation technologies like Docker and Kubernetes.
- Advanced skills in Linux server administration (e.g., RHEL, CentOS, Ubuntu, Amazon Linux).
- Knowledge of modern security practices and their application in observability.
- Familiarity with open standards for observability, including OpenTelemetry and other industry-accepted frameworks.
What additional skills and experience would be good to have
- Experience with tracing tools such as Jaeger or Zipkin.
- Hands-on experience with logging and monitoring tools like Fluentd and Graylog.
- Knowledge of distributed systems and microservices architectures.
- Experience with Service Mesh technologies such as envoy or Istio or Linkerd for enhanced observability.
- Proficiency with big data tools and platforms like Apache Kafka for telemetry data processing.
- Familiarity with security monitoring and incident response in observability.
- AWS Solution Architecture certification is a plus.
