The Opportunity

As a Derivative & Collateral Operations Strategist you will work in a fast paced, time-sensitive, collaborative environment.  As a critical member of the Derivatives, Collateral, and Investment Pricing team, you will work with multiple Corporate Units, Lines of Business (LOBs), Investment Managers, and subsidiaries to provide oversight, analysis and complex processing of various derivative and collateral transactions related to MassMutual and its portfolio. You will also work with members of the Program Management Office for Investments (PMOfI) to assist in formulating and defining business and/ or systems scope, requirements, and objectives as it relates to Derivatives and Collateral Operations. The individual will be the subject matter expert (SME) by applying finance, investment accounting knowledge and other technical skills to provide oversight related to the current and future state needs.  A successful candidate must be able to work under pressure, accurately and with limited supervision and must be able to represent Investment Management and the company in communications with internal and external constituents with discretion, tact and decorum.

The Team

You will report to the Director of Collateral Management, part of MassMutual Derivatives, Collateral, and Investment Pricing team within the Investment Management Division.  The team is responsible for Counterparty Onboarding, trade settlements and collateral management for OTC, Cleared, Exchange Traded (ET), Regulatory Dodd Frank variation and initial margin, related to MassMutual’s General Investment Account (GIA).  The team is diligently working on a multi-year project related to the transformation of MassMutual’s Derivatives and Collateral Platform.  The effort entails the implementation of one stop shopping for Derivatives, including a front, middle and back-office solution.      

The Impact:

  • Team lead and facilitator of daily oversight of day-to-day collateral margin and payment processes and exposures
  • Sought as a key resource for resolution of unique or complex business problems
  • Hands on approach working on cross training and team development
  • Liaison with front office, risk, compliance, accounting, treasury and audit teams
  • Approve wire transfers and submit SWIFT communications
  • Coordinate broker relationships including Counterparty onboarding
  • Report and analyze cash and investment activity for various audiences including senior leaders in IM, the LOBs and Corporate
  • Responsible to assist in building process flows related to derivative and collateral operational aspects of complex transactions and new mandates Oversight of various collateral types
  • Responsible for Derivative and Collateral project work or high visible, divisional/cross-divisional complex projects to support Investment Management and Corporate goals
  • Coordinate efforts with Project management team (PMOFI) as the business subject matter expert (SME)
  • Create and build meaningful metrics related to collateral movements, quality and impact on liquidity
  • Perform detailed analysis and resolutions for complex variances related to derivatives and collateral
  • Manage cash forecasting and analysis (foreign and domestic) as it relates to derivatives
  • Assist to implement new regulations related to Collateral and Derivatives
  • Drives continuous improvement and efficiencies with internal processes
  • Completing periodic Audit, Sarbanes Oxley, and quarterly reporting 

The Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Management, or other related field
  • 5+ years of derivative operations experience with an understanding of collateral management and related investments
  • 5+ years of with Derivatives, Collateral, Investment Operations, and Accounting
  • 3+ years of Derivative and Collateral Management process and the related data flows
  • 3+ years of knowledge of a wide range of derivative asset classes and how investment information for such asset classes is used
  • 3+ years of Ability to work with investment data consumers to analyze, understand issues and assist in issue resolution

The Ideal Qualifications

  • 7+ years of investment operations experience
  • 3+ year of experience with Calypso/Murex Systems/Eagle Star and PACE
  • 2+ years of ISDA (International Swaps and Derivatives Association) and CSA (Credit Support Annex)
  • 2+ years of TriOptima portfolio reconciliation
  • 2+ years of SAP Ledger
  • 2+ years of AcadiaSoft
  • 2+ years of SWIFT and payment process
  • Strong attention to detail - precision and quality
  • Drives continuous improvement and efficiencies for the team
  • Adapts to a fast-paced, high-intensity environment
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks to achieve deadlines
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work in a team-based environment
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to address and resolve conflicts diplomatically
  • 3+ years of Excel, Pivot table and VBA a plus
  • 3+ years of SQL queries a plus
  • 1+ years of experience with project management, business requirement, agile methodology, or Jira a plus
