The Opportunity

As a Modeling Actuary Director on the Annuity Valuation team you will be responsible for supporting the modeling, analysis and reporting for group and individual, deferred and payout, fixed and deferred annuities. In addition, the role will work with pricing and hedging teams to evaluate the impact of changes to current processes.  You will be a key resource in maintaining our production process, updating assumptions, and communicating results to various teams throughout the organization.

The Team

The Annuity Valuation Team is focused on the valuation and actuarial reporting for all of MassMutual’s annuity products. Our team members help drive delivery of accurate financial information and analysis, in actionable and forward-thinking ways. We are a small team, so agility is important.  We orchestrate innovative and creative solutions that go beyond technical analysis to offer timely and valued advice with key business insights to help the company better understand and manage the annuity business.  If you are someone that has a passion for continuous improvement, innovative practices, and a curiosity to pursue learning opportunities, this may the right role for you.

The Impact

Our ideal candidate has demonstrated both the ability to lead and manage people as well as possess strong technical knowledge.  You will use your skills to help ensure MassMutual’s financial strength.  You will participate in the management and development of team members, help implement emerging regulation and variety of other modeling usage such as Cash Flow Testing, GAAP reserving and VM-21 into our financial models.  You will ensure the efficient of data structure and provide industry insight and best practices.

Specific expectations from this role:

  • Lead the building/enhancement/maintenance of actuarial infrastructure (data/models) either by leading model development and/or working with Systems/Data & Analytics on data issues, and bringing in new products, new regulations and other improvements
  • Execute complex and strategic projects, utilizing business acumen to manage potential issues and conflicts
  • Influence and engage actuaries and non-actuaries at all levels and effectively communicate technical and non-technical information
  • Manages complexity and ambiguity, resourcefully identifying a number of solutions to problems and anticipates and addresses long-term implications of company decisions
  • Assist as needed on monthly production / reporting / analysis / explanation of reserves (direct, assumed and ceded)/DAC
  • Assist as needed on annual reserve adequacy testing – production / reporting / analysis / communication of results
  • Continually improve model processes and streamline work processes so we can spend more time analyzing results
  • Use the valuation governance framework, including assumption-setting, model development and management and data governance to implement new products and produce accurate, informative results

The Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher
  • Fellow or Associate of the Society of Actuaries
  • 6+ years’ actuarial experience, including working knowledge of valuation techniques
  • 5+ years' experience in data and model management

The Ideal Qualifications

  • 8 + years’ actuarial experience, including working knowledge of valuation techniques
  • Strong modeling and technical skills, but also a healthy intellectual curiosity and willingness to think outside the box
  • Demonstrated accountability and ownership of long-term independent projects
  • Continuous improvement and strong controls mindset
  • Strong understanding of regulation/accounting/capital frameworks (Stat/GAAP/Tax, RBC, Cash Flow Testing)
  • Working knowledge of US annuity products
  • Knowledge of annuity products, risk management techniques, regulations and methodologies
  • Strong experience with Prophet modeling platform
  • Experience with VBA and CASE modeling platforms
  • Ability to build and maintain strong working relationships across cross-functional groups and to proactively resolve issues
  • Strong execution and time management skills with the ability to lead and thrive in fast changing and challenging environments
  • Deal effectively with ambiguous and unstructured problems
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal

Salary Range: $144,800.00-$190,000.00 Apply
