Where you fit in
Shell Asset Management Company B.V. (SAMCo) is the in-house asset manager of the Shell plc group. SAMCo provides global investment advice and asset management services to pension funds associated with Shell. With total assets under management of around USD 80bln, these funds make up one of the world’s largest corporate pension schemes. SAMCo is located in The Hague in the Netherlands.
SAMCo is supervised by the Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM) and the Dutch Central Bank (DNB). The company is internationally oriented, with clients in various countries and 200 employees of different nationalities. These pension fund clients have significantly different asset class allocations to optimise the pension benefits of their pensioners.
On behalf of its clients, SAMCo invests in equities, fixed income and alternative investment categories (such as private equity, real estate and hedge funds) across the world. Continuous change in financial markets and the diversity of its clients make SAMCo a challenging work environment to operate in.
Within the SAMCo Strategy department, you will be a member of a team which consists of 6 staff members. The team’s main responsibilities are:
Clients’ strategic asset allocations, including supporting Asset Liability Management (ALM) processes, Strategic Asset Allocation (SAA) and implementation planning;
Providing clients with macroeconomic and financial market commentary, and contributing to client reporting; and
Client portfolio rebalancing
What is the role?
In the role of Investment Strategist, you will contribute to the Strategy Team’s full range of advice on the various asset classes and the investment environment in general, and thus to SAMCo’s advice on clients’ asset allocation. Key components of this will be:
Perform research, analyse and advise on the risk/return characteristics of the various asset classes (equity, fixed income, private equity, real estate and hedge funds);
Contribute to macroeconomic and financial market commentary.
Participate in a diverse set of strategic projects such as evaluating the various hedge strategies (interest rates, inflation and FX) and assessing how these policies should change over time; and
You will work closely together with the other Strategy Team members, SAMCo’s Client Focal Points (who are responsible for the individual client relationships) and portfolio managers from the Fixed Income, Equities and Alternatives teams.
What do we need from you?
Several years of relevant experience in strategic investment advice at a leading pension fund, consultancy firm or asset manager;
A Master's degree in financial economics, economics or finance and investments, preferably with a CFA qualification;
A good knowledge and understanding of macroeconomics and financial markets;
Robust analytical and problem-solving abilities, as well as the capacity to translate complex analysis into a concise investment case;
Good interpersonal and communication skills, which contribute to you being a strong team player; and
Excellent verbal and written command of the English language, as well as good presentation skills.
What do we offer?
A role in a rapidly changing environment where you can contribute to driving the development of the portfolio of the future;
A creative, collaborative environment in a truly global company;
The opportunity to develop your career. Shell advocates career development and you will be encouraged to try new roles and to experience new settings;
Competitive remuneration; and
An informal working environment as part of an experienced team of colleagues who strive for the best.
