What is the role
The Corrosion and Materials Engineer (CME) is a key member of the Pressure Equipment Integrity (PEI) Department for the Norco Manufacturing Complex. This position is one of several CME’s who provide corrosion and materials support to the site. The CME is part of a team of PEI Engineers and Inspectors who are responsible for managing pressure equipment integrity at Norco. The PEI Department reports through the Engineering organization.
The CME will be involved in evaluating many exciting projects occurring at Norco, including circular plastics assessment, vegetable oil co-processing, renewable naphtha feeds, and more!
Accountabilities and Responsibilities:
The Corrosion and Materials Engineer contributes to pressure equipment integrity and process safety by fostering corrosion awareness, developing monitoring and mitigation plans, and providing technical support on corrosion and materials selection issues. Primary responsibilities for the position include:
- Provide recommendations for corrosion control and material selection for equipment maintenance, repairs, plant changes (MOCs), and capital projects.
- Provide technical support to Process Engineers, Production Specialists, PEI Engineers, and PEI Inspectors for day-to-day problem-solving activities.
- Provide technical support for planned or unplanned maintenance, shutdown, or turnaround events, during and after normal business hours, as the business needs arise.
- Develop and support work processes and tools to help manage the overall corrosion control program.
- Evaluate feed diet MOCs for potential corrosion concerns.
- Support Proactive Technical Monitoring (PTM) and Ensure Safe Production (ESP) activities through the maintenance of Corrosion Control Documents (CCDs) and Integrity Operating Window (IOW) variables and by performing routine monitoring of process unit corrosion variables.
- Coordinate corrosion monitoring, data gathering and their subsequent use for inspection planning. Provide technical input to chemical inhibitor programs, boiler feedwater, and cooling water treatment programs, and other chemical treatment programs.
- Support the development of optimized inspection strategies specific to the equipment and process conditions.
- Support the implementation and maintenance of S-RBI.
- Participate in corrosion reviews and risk assessments to develop turnaround work scopes. Provide technical support during major maintenance events, including turnarounds and pitstops.
- Participate in analysis of pressure equipment related failures and ensure that PEI related LOPCs are sufficiently investigated to understand cause and develop long-term solutions.
- Conduct material failure analyses and coordinate formal analysis activities with Shell Projects & Technology.
- Network with other Corrosion & Materials Engineers in Shell and external professional organizations to share knowledge and experiences.
- Deliver planned business performance improvements in terms of Asset Integrity & Process Safety (LOPCs), Crude Flexibility, Reliability, and Cost.
What we need from you
- Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis
- Candidate must possess a Bachelor of Science degree in Corrosion Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Welding Engineering, or Materials Science.
- Candidate must have 3 or more years of corrosion and materials experience, preferably in the refining manufacturing environment.
- Knowledge of refining processes, equipment, and degradation mechanisms.
- Knowledge in refining material selection and specification.
- Corrosion control design and management.
- Equipment integrity and repair assessment.
- Non-destructive testing knowledge.
- Field inspection and detection/evaluation of material defects.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Good interpersonal and teamwork skills.
- Self-starter who can set own goals and direction.
- There will be minimal travel requirements and some climbing of ladders and entering of equipment during outages to inspect and evaluate corrosion issues.
