Where you fit in

The Naval Architecture team within Shipping & Maritime, Technology provides specialist technical advice and assurance to floating projects across Shell. Projects include classical oil & gas projects across upstream floating assets shipping, but also include support to new areas including new energies, renewables, and carbon capture projects.

What’s the role?

The role will be responsible for providing Naval Architecture advice to Fleet Operations, construction and conversion projects in which Shell Shipping Technology is engaged, and to other parts of the Group. This person will also be responsible for undertaking the Naval Architect work in support of Shell Shipping Technology activities and fleet operations.

The responsibilities of the role include:

  • Participation in project teams for new construction and conversions, including the preparation of outline specifications, technical evaluation of tenders, negotiation with short listed bidders, plan approval, design discussions with builder, attendance and witness at factory acceptance tests, commissioning, and trials.

  • Effective liaison with personnel from professional bodies, shipyard managers, Shell Shipping fleet management operation units and Shell Group discipline engineers.

  • Follow policies and interpret legislative requirements with some guidance.

  • Keep abreast of industry developments and recognise potential for economic implementation of innovative ideas as a means of increasing operational safety or reducing costs.

  • Ensure that maintenance and repair of all ships and systems is commensurate with the highest possible quality, realistic cost, and potential period out of service.

  • Participate in technical discussions with manufacturers regarding design, testing and operation of equipment.

  • Design, installation, and commissioning of equipment for maritime assets.

  • The Naval Architect may provide casualty response within a multi-discipline team. Training will be provided in specialised software and response system.

What we need from you

Along with your degree in Naval Architecture or a similar discipline, we hope to see the following in your CV:

  • Experience in tanker and LNG carrier design including plan review and approval.

  • Experience of working in a shipyard environment as part of the shipyard’s design or construction team or as a representative of the buyer or classification society. The position requires a sound technical knowledge of naval architecture with a bias on structural design and sea-going performance of ships and offshore assets.

  • Comprehensive understanding of relevant Classification Society Rules and Design Engineering Practices.

  • Ability to analyse and develop proposals and solutions to a wide range of technical and operational problems seeking guidance from Seniors where applicable.

  • A team player with the necessary communication (oral and written) skills to interface with other disciplines and the ability to produce written reports of a high quality in the English language.

  • Assess personal competencies and development to close any competency gaps and to enhance professional skills.

  • Maintain a contemporary knowledge base within own area of expertise.
