The overall objective of Social Performance (SP) team is to create a positive presence and legacy in the communities and countries in which we operate to gain community acceptance for Shell’s business objectives. This is crucial for our ambition to strengthen our license to operate and demonstrate that we are a responsible company, welcomed by the communities where we operate.

What’s the role?

The purpose of the role is to support respectful engagement with local communities, which is critical to the success of projects and long-term operations. We need to understand the priorities and address the concerns or grievances people may have.

More specifically:

  • You will be a key part of our Corporate Relations SP team and will report to the National Social Performance Manager.

  • The position must maintain external community and stakeholder oversight for the upstream portfolio (projects, assets, exploration) in Australia. This, together with its close interaction with other functions makes it both particularly challenging and interesting.

  • The CLO is expected to provide leadership in community and stakeholder engagement in external environments, specifically local communities, and local councils, representing the QGC upstream business and working with the other class of business leads and teams as appropriate.

  • The position will also require a strong understanding of the various components of social performance.

What we need from you

We are keen to speak with professionals preferably with a Bachelor level in environmental or social studies with work experience in related fields of community and social development.

We hope to find most of the following competencies:

  • Experience in engaging and communicating effectively internally and externally at a variety of levels and to work comfortably across HSSE, C&P, Corporate Relations functions

  • Can demonstrate external focus; develop and maintain active networks of relationships partnerships with local groups (e.g., community organizations, civil society organizations, non-profits)

  • Ability to implement and communicate business objectives across the community as appropriate, including managing relationships where adverse response or differing views may exist

  • Operational or project experience and in a variety of environmental and social contexts; experience with community development and/or social investment

  • Experience managing grant funding opportunities for community as well as collaborating with key stakeholders to deliver benefits for broad community

  • Preferred experience with project-based impact assessments

  • Can influence business leaders to make tangible changes to activities, to minimise negative social impacts and enhance benefits; Can support business leaders and managers in incorporating community perspectives/information into business decision making

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, proven skills to deliver under time pressure
