Job Description:

Duties/Responsibilities:

Reporting to the STEM Starter Academy Coordinator, the STEM Navigator will support students, help them access available resources, find a rewarding career pathway, and navigate their way to graduation. This person collaborates with undergraduate faculty and the STEM Center staff to facilitate and support the curricular and co-curricular development and retention of students majoring in STEM disciplines at STCC. The STEM Navigator identifies academic support services and workshops and provides individual and small group coaching and consultative services designed to assist STEM students with developing and implementing skills and strategies to succeed academically in addition to the following responsibilities.

  • Collaborates with Career Services to connect students with employers, internships, and job fairs.
  • Supports the Summer Bridge Program and Summer STEM Camps by recruiting local high school STEM majors to the Summer Bridge Program and STEM summer camps. This person will also recruit faculty, tutors, and assistants to run the summer bridge program and summer camps. Duties also include planning STEM cohort-building activities and events throughout the summer, reviewing Bridge applications, and fielding questions from applicants.
  • Case manages SSA and STEM students & students that are in STEM-related courses.
  • Assists with outreach programming to promote and recruit students into the STEM division and the STEM Starter Academy and HSI grants.
  • Meets with students (1:1, groups, etc.) to advise and coach on major/career decision-making, study skills, self-marketing (resumes, interviewing, networking, LinkedIn, etc.), job/internship opportunities, and career readiness.
  • Ensures good record keeping on student interactions and work with the STEM Starter Academy grant to document student case management.
  • Develops and implements appropriate workshops and programming when necessary.
  • Builds partnerships with faculty and staff at STCC and other institutions to create research experiences and STEM skill-building experiences for students.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with other institutions in order to facilitate pipeline programs for SSA/ STEM students to transition into four-year programs at local colleges and universities.
  • Builds collaborations with faculty of research institutions and community partners to create internship opportunities.
  • Supports the SSA Coordinator and HSI Director with data collection, surveys, and submission to Massachusetts Department of Higher Education every semester.
  • Assists with outreach programming to promote the division, and the grant, and recruit students and employers.
  • Assists with the overall day-to-day operations of the STEM Starter Academy Success Program and HSI Grants.

Abilities and Skills:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of related experience.
  • Highly motivated, resourceful, and self-directed with the ability to deliver in a fast paced environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at the same time and to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information appropriately.
  • Very strong attention to detail.
  • Maintains professional knowledge in applicable areas (i.e., holds a working knowledge of assigned areas; researches new trends and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; attends conferences, workshops, and training sessions).
  • Performs several STEM Center tasks (i.e., schedules student appointments; answers telephone calls; types, copies, and files documents; and processes outgoing mail.).
  • Interacts with STCC departments, local agencies, and individuals.
  • Participates in college, division, and department meetings, events, and training as recommended and approved by the supervisor. Participates in professional development opportunities, college committees, work groups, task forces, and other professional organizations as the supervisor approves.
  • The STEM Navigator performs other duties and responsibilities related to those listed above, which maintain the basic level of the position, including experience with Microsoft Office and Google applications, excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills; and a demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with a diverse constituency of faculty, staff, and students.


Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in counseling, Education, or a closely related field with two (2) years of experience and training involving career counseling and/or academic advising.
  • Works well with diverse and underrepresented student populations.
  • Encompasses creative problem-solving capabilities.
  • Demonstrates the ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to FERPA regulations.
  • Works independently as well as part of a team.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This position is in an office setting. Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work. Must be able to remain stationary 50% of the time. This person needs to move about inside the office to access office machinery. Constantly operates a computer and other equipment, i.e., a copier. This person frequently communicates with students, faculty, and staff. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
