Job Description:

Springfield Technical Community College seeks a dedicated and experienced Laser/Optics Technology (Photonics) full-time faculty member to join our School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching in the discipline, as well as developing curricula in laser/optics and quantum adjacent technologies. Understanding contemporary community college students, many of whom are adults, this faculty member guides students through theoretical and practical/lab learning environments, preparing graduates from a Certificate or Degree program for careers in fields that continue to evolve and expand. The faculty member will also contribute to the college's mission of fostering student success through innovative teaching and community engagement, which includes early college partnerships, as well as maintaining industry relationships.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teach a range of courses in Laser Optics Technology (Photonics), including but not limited to Laser Fundamentals, Geometric & Wave Optics, Intro to Optics & Photonics, Fiber Optics Technology, Advanced Topics in Lasers, Industrial Laser Applications, Senior Projects, and Laser Safety.
  • Develop and update curriculum materials to reflect the latest advancements in photonics and quantum adjacent technologies.
  • Provide hands-on laboratory instruction, ensuring students gain practical experience with industry-standard equipment and techniques.
  • Mentor and advise students on academic and career pathways in the field of laser optics technology. ? Collaborate with colleagues to design and implement effective teaching strategies that support diverse learning styles.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with industry trends and educational practices.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, curriculum planning, and assessment activities. ? Contribute to the college community through service on committees, student recruitment, and community outreach.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages student success and retention.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the department chair or academic dean and meet contractual requirements.


Requirements:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Laser Optics, Photonics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • Proven experience in laser optics technology/photonics, with a strong understanding of both theoretical concepts and practical applications.
  • Prior college teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse student population.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree in a related field.
  • Professional experience in the laser optics industry, including work on cutting-edge photonics technologies and applications.
  • Experience with curriculum development and instructional design.
  • Familiarity with online teaching platforms and tools.
  • Active participation in professional organizations related to laser optics and photonics.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work is generally performed in a classroom or lab setting. Work involves a high activity level and pace, and competing time demands. Essential tasks require typing/keyboard skills, phone usage, and reading, speaking, and listening. Use office equipment and computer keyboards requiring eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity. Balancing, crouching, grasping, pulling, reaching and stooping may also be required.
