Overview:

We are looking for someone to fill the role of Lead Telematics Engineer, as part of the wider Fleet and Logistics Team. This position is responsible for leading on all technical aspects of the telematics function within the UK business.

The Telematics Team is responsible for the research, development, implementation and maintenance of the technical kit that operates the Zipcar UK fleet. The telematics kit is key to ensuring our fleet interacts with our system and app and is therefore integral to the success of the car sharing service.

We are looking for an individual with a passion in the automotive sector and a background in or understanding of automotive electronics and maintenance & repair, who is looking to develop their skills in building, implementing and maintaining telematic devices and vehicle tracking systems, at one of the UKs leading shared mobility companies.

Telematics is a constantly evolving world, meaning you will be working on the latest innovative, cutting-edge technology that vehicle manufactures utilise. This role requires creativity and problem-solving skills to gain useful data from the fleet, to provide Zipcar members with the best experience possible.

The role is primarily based at our telematics workshop and office space by Heathrow Airport; however, may occasionally require you to visit vehicles in the field or our other offices in Bracknell or Victoria, London.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To lead the telematics discovery process for new vehicles, finding all the required signals, including reverse engineering certain signals from CAN bus systems.
  • Full wiring guide designing and drawing
  • Managing the outsourcing of wiring harness manufacture – occasional internal harness building
  • Main telematics support to wider business
  • Full autonomy for leading the definition, prototyping and development of telematics component innovation.
  • Repairing faulty equipment
  • Working closely with the Zipcar US telematics team to troubleshoot issues, test firmware updates and knowledge share to improve both market’s systems.
  • Support the technical relationship and troubleshooting with Mobile Network Operators
  • Stock management/Invoice admin
  • Managing and teaching the telematics associate
    • Telematics fixes
    • Stock management
    • Invoicing/PO process
    • Wiring guides
    • Support role for discoveries
    • Ad hoc harness building
  • Responding thoroughly and efficiently to telematics related queries from other departments, vendors and suppliers
  • Leading in the training of vehicle specific installations
  • Leading in the training of kitting vendors
  • Workshop maintenance

Requirements & Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have the following skills:

  • Preferable minimum NVQ Level 3 in Mechanics
  • Considerable experience in automotive electronic installation and automotive repair and maintenance
  • Experience in telematics systems hardware and software
  • Skills in crimping and soldering
  • Experience with Electric Vehicles maintenance/electronics
  • Positive and professional approach to problem solving – ability to think outside the box
  • Capable of working well in a team or independently
  • Ability to identify, prioritize and focus on critical tasks
  • Strong communication skills
  • A full driving license
  • Literacy in Microsoft Office
